About Ray Adams

Ray Adams has been teaching at universities for over 30 years, mostly in the areas of linguistics, language, and communication. He has worked with international students, migrant professionals and business migrants in Australia, supporting their learning of English through face-to-face courses, consulting and online activities.

Ray also has several years of experience working in both media and education. As a principal in a publishing enterprise he has written, designed and edited a wide range of material, including:

  • Advertising material and annual reports for business and industry bodies
  • Teacher-training materials for the local Department of Education
  • Course materials, both online and printed, for university teaching
  • Plain English books on industrial legislation for general readership
  • Academic articles and materials in a range of fields

His work in media has also involved writing and editing material for publication in newspapers, magazines and newsletters.

Ray has conducted and published research into issues of discipline-specific language features, and collaborated on the development of text analysis software. This software was designed for writers from non-English speaking backgrounds to help them deal with language specific to their fields of study or professional activity.

Ray has a lot of experience editing work written for publication by academic staff at universities in diverse fields such as business, sciences and engineering. Much of his recent editing work has involved material written by academics and business-people whose first language is not English.

He has qualifications in Linguistics, International Studies and Business.
